Byland Abbey is the perfect place to stop on a family day out, or if you're walking or cycling in the North York Moors National Park.
Once one of the greatest monasteries in England, Byland Abbey inspired the design of church buildings throughout the North.
A truly outstanding example of early gothic architecture, it inspired the design of the famous York Minster rose window.
Guided Tours & Museum Opening Times
With the support of our knowledgeable volunteers, we are delighted to open our bookshop & museum throughout the year and also offer a programme of vibrant guided tours.
From 1 November - 31 December the museum and bookshop will be open from 11:00 - 1:00 every Saturday and Sunday, as well as some Bank Holidays.
Guided tours take place every Saturday at 12:00 noon. Visitors are welcome to turn-up on the day and places on the tour will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. Alternatively, if you would like to pre-book, please do so by e-mailing sam.macfie@english-heritage.org.uk
There may also be tours available during the week, depending on the availability of our Volunteer Guides. These will be advertised on the day at the site entrance. For any questions about our tours, please contact us via the e-mail address above.
Please note: the tours are reliant on the availability of our volunteers and in very inclement weather the tour may not go ahead.
Before You Go
Parking – Small, triangular-shaped car park (room for about 9 cars). Additional parking is available behind the Abbey Inn. Disabled visitors may be set down at entrance gate, but beware passing cars.
Facilities – You are welcome to bring a picnic to eat in the grounds. Picnicking is allowed anywhere in the grounds except on the mediaeval floor tiles.
Toilets - Please note that the toilets are currently unavailable.
Byland Abbey Museum - The museum at Byland Abbey is opened by a team of volunteers, allowing public access to view a collection that explores further the story of the abbey. Access is available most Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays until the end of October.

Plan a Great Day Out
Byland is a short drive from another of Yorkshire’s great abbeys - Rievaulx Abbey. Also nearby are Helmsley’s Archaeological Store and Helmsley Castle. For tours of the archaeological store, please check the website for details.
